ARTIST FOCUS: JOSE REAL

Continuing our Artist Focus series today, we have Jose Real aka Fuacka answering our questions about his life, his artwork, and all of the great stuff in between. He has a knack for creating awesome designs for T-shirts, mashing together two things you never would have guessed in a way that you can’t help but love. You can read why he’s such a cool person below.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?

My name is Jose Real, I was born thirty years ago in a little city from La Mancha called Puertollano but currently I’m living in Madrid with my girlfriend and our two cats.

What is your day job?

At this moment I’m full-time dedicated to design and illustration. About a year ago I made a great decision, to quit my job and put all my efforts into what I liked most, drawing.

How long have you been illustrating?

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, after school, I use to spend the evenings at my mother’s shop doodling on wrapping paper.

Is there a particular person’s style that has influenced your art?

Don’t know, I love the dark comic-book style of Mignola, Miller, Risso, Wrightson, Bachallo…  But there’s a lot of awesome artists: Ryan Sook, Sean Murphy, Gabriel Ba, Guy Davis, Stuart Immonen, Eric Powell…

What medium do you typically use when creating art?

Digital, but it starts with some awful pencil sketches. I used to be paper-pencil straight but computers can be incredibly intuitive.

Are you an avid gamer? What are you currently playing?

Yeah! Actually I’m playing “State of Decay" right now and it’s awesome! A sandbox with zombies! But I want to play it again, seems like I have built the best shelter and barely played the main quest…

How do you tackle new projects?

In a passionate way :D For example, I started watching Doctor Who just to educate myself for a project and now I’m finishing the 8th season.

A lot of your designs are inspired by television shows and pop culture. Do you have a favorite show/cartoon? What are you watching right now?

There’s a lot of cool TV shows that I’ve just discovered: Parks and Recreations, Attack On Titan (you got to see this anime, you won’t regret!), Doctor Who, The Boondocks, Venture Bros…

But my favorite actually is Game of Thrones. 

What do you like to do for fun?

Go out, have a nice dinner, drink some beers with friends and discover new cities with my girlfriend.

If you could be any video game character, who would it be?

My character in every Elder Scrolls game: a brutal-stealthy warrior with heavy armor expert on two-handed sword, bow, pick-pocketing and skillfull magician on destruction and conjuration spells.

What is the best art advice you have ever received?

From my father, “No matter what are you doing or what your job is, just keep drawing!” My father is a great guy.

What is your most memorable video game experience?

First time walking around Hyrule after getting over Forest Temple as young Link and discover it’s getting darker and skeletons are rising from the floor. Or jumping over Lon Lon Ranch fence with Epona… That game is EPIC!

If you could be a dinosaur with any super power, which would you choose and why?

A huge Sauropod like the Brachiosaurus with telekinetic skills for obvious reasons: I wouldn’t have predators and wouldn’t have to move to eat :D
